The DISCOV.ER project involves the creation of an infrastructure of sensors and smart objects that will enable data and information to be collected from the environment, which will then be used to define a digital twin and train predictive algorithms, with data and processing that will be made freely available to institutions and citizens through augmented reality systems designed in collaboration with them. The opportunities for innovation are aimed at combating climate change (through digitisation, automatic collection and integration of information from the territory, to develop advanced monitoring strategies using Digital Twin and Artificial Intelligence tools); social innovation and participation (through the active involvement of citizens and stakeholders in Citizen Science activities); innovative services for eco-tourism (through the integration of Data Visualisation and Game Thinking tools).
DISCOV.ER develops the Digital Twin of areas of the Po Delta of naturalistic and tourist interest, to monitor and improve their sustainability through an Environmental Intelligence infrastructure. It also integrates heterogeneous data with different levels of trustworthiness to create a credible and shareable data source that can be exploited by anyone who needs it. Finally, it develops innovative services to raise public awareness – among citizens and visitors – on biodiversity and sustainability issues. Through the implementation and training of Machine Learning models, depending on the Digital Twin’s predisposition, the algorithms will have to recognise fauna from photos or audio and be able to make predictions on future trends of indicators defined within the project. After the implementation of the technological solutions, the project also includes the validation of the technological solutions adopted.

The expected result of DISCOV.ER, which can be replicated in other similar contexts, is to promote natural heritage and revitalise the eco-tourism sector through the use of engaging technologies (data visualisation, game thinking, AR), co-designed with the target audience (citizens, tourists, schools, children).
