The multi-utility company Hera developed a simulated algorithm, tested in the laboratory, for detecting leaks in the water network, based on measuring the vibrations induced on the pipes. However, in order to verify its performance, a field trial was necessary in a real environment. Hera turned to Romagna Tech for the definition and subsequent design of the most suitable tools for the experimental phase, as well as for the evaluation of the reliability and real validity of the identified algorithm and the technologies that enable its implementation. Hera also expressed the need to evaluate the existence and applicability of technological solutions based on the use of hydrophones as well as accelerometers.
The aim of the project was to define the technical specifications of the data logger to be used in the experiment. The proposed project analysed the state of the art in the use of hydrophone/accelerometer systems in terms of commercial devices available on the market, dimensional, economic and performance characteristics, and areas of application. It also provided an overview of the latest generation solutions on the market, with their relative advantages and disadvantages in relation to Hera’s needs. The final aspect of the project was the adaptation of the chosen technological solution to Hera’s own pipes. The project took about a year to complete.
The technological research developed can also be used for non-invasive analysis of pipes for breaks in the distribution of drinking water.
